A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIGERIA – (BY WWW.161718.INFO) – Nigeria is a great country and it is often referred to as the giant of Africa because not only is it Africa’s most populous country, it also has the biggest economy in Africa. The destruction of lives and properties by Islamic Boko Haram did not stop well meaningful Nigerians from working hard and moving forward, just like we are doing here at 161718.info AKA The Way Forward In Life.
According to Forbes, Nigerians dominate Africa’s 50 richest list and at the top yet again is cement tycoon Aliko Dangote of Nigeria, who is joined on the list of Africa’s 50 Richest by 12 other countrymen, 3 new billionaires included. In comparison South Africa claims 11 spots.
However, it’s a pity that Nigeria’s wealth is not evenly distributed and some of it’s citizens are therefore very poor. Some Nigerian men have too many wives as well as too many children. This accounts for why the largest family in the world is from Nigeria.
Recently, Bill Gates, the richest man in the world and Dangote, the richest man in Africa, both pledged $100m to reduce malnutrition in Nigeria.
The richest black woman in the world is also a Nigerian who goes by the name Folorunsho Alakija. (See her pic below this article.)
Africa’s Richest Woman, Folorunsho Alakija, who is currently the richest black woman in the world (a position previously held by Oprah Winfrey from the U.S) has revealed that she did not go to a University.

She added that it did not stop her from making it in life and achieving her goals. The 65-year-old Folorunsho Alakija made this revelation while giving a motivational speech to the students of the University of Lagos during the 2014 UN International Youths Day in Lagos. In her own words:
“I come from Ikorodu, Lagos state. I am married to a dashing young lawyer of 70 years of age and we have four grown up gentlemen and grandchildren.
It has not been a rag to riches fairytale. It has not been an overnight phenomenon like some cases which you find here and there all over the world. For as long as I can remember, I had always wanted my own business. Hard work…am trying to tell you how I got to where I am if you want those billions.
Hard work, diligence, persistence…days where you nearly gave up but I chose not to give up.”
If you want to know more about Nigeria, meet and discuss with Nigerians, you may wish to join the Nigerian discussion group that was founded by Happy Daddy on 1. Oct 2006 to commemorate Nigeria independence day. The country’s name, Nigeria, first appeared in print in “The Times” in 1897 and was suggested by the paper’s colonial editor Flora Shaw who later married Frederick Lugard, the first Governor General of the Amalgamated Nigeria.
The name comes from a combination of the words “Niger” (the country’s longest river) and “Area”. Its adjective form is Nigerian. Nigeria, which is officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa and the most populous country on the African continent.
Nigeria shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, Niger in the north, and borders the Gulf of Guinea in the south.
The Nigerian government was previously headquartered in Lagos but in 1991, it moved to Abuja which is more centrally located. The people of Nigeria have an extensive history, and based on archaeological evidence, human habitation of the area dates back to at least 9000 BC.
However, the Nigerian state came into being on October 1, 1960 when Nigeria declared its independence from the British and at present consists of 36 states and the federal capital territory, Abuja.
Nigeria re-achieved democracy in 1999 after a sixteen-year interruption by a series of military dictators. Today it is ruled by President Buhari who took over from Goodluck Jonathan.
From 1966 until 1999, Nigeria had been ruled (except the short-lived second republic, 1979-1983) by military dictators who seized power in coups and counter-coups. Today, Nigeria enjoys a free and fair democratic rule under a civilian government.
