Barely a day after the German chancellor, Angela Merkel visited the White House, president Donald Trump accuses Germany of owing NATO and U.S vast sums of money for defense. Trump took to Twitter to say that: “owes vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!”
Germany has rejected Trump’s claim it owes NATO and U.S. ‘vast sums’ for defense. German Defense Minister, Ursula von der Leyen, said “There is no debt account at NATO.”
She added that it was wrong to link the alliance’s target for members to spend 2 percent of their economic output on defense by 2024 solely to NATO. According to her:
“Defense spending also goes into UN peacekeeping missions, into our European missions and into our contribution to the fight against IS terrorism.”
The question is why is Trump fond of making false statements and constantly dishing out wrong informations? Still he accuses the media of propagating fake news.
Trump claims that the crowd at his inauguration was the largest and that up to 1.5 million attended the event at the Capitol and National Mall. This turned out to be false. See Trump’s inauguration crowd vs Obama’s inauguration crowd.
