In a tweet, the Mexican President, Enrique Pena Nieto informed the nation that the infamous drug lord known as “El Chapo” who escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico for the second time about six months ago has been captured.
“Mission accomplished: We have him. I want to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained,”
The Mexican Attorney General’s office said it had arrested seven officials over suspected involvement in the jail break of drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. The escape shows the high level of corruption in Mexico.
Joaquin Guzman alias El Chapo, the world’s most famous drug lord has escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico for the second time.
According to Mexico’s national security commissioner, Monte Alejandro Rubido, Guzman slipped out of the prison through a rectangular passage in the shower area of his cell that led to a nearly mile-long tunnel running underneath the prison.
The tunnel was illuminated, perforated with PVC piping for ventilation and equipped with adapted motorcycle-on-rails to whisk the drug lord to freedom.
The manhunt which included highway checkpoints, stepped up border security and even the closure of an international airport failed to turn up any trace of Guzman.
