The republicans are so scared of the Russia investigation because it will be very disastrous for the Republican party and it could also pave way for the impeachment of President Donald Trump who is a Republican.
Robert Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to take over the federal investigation of Russian meddling in last year’s election, from Fmr. F.B.I. director, James Comey on May 17, 2017. This was due to the fact that President Trump abruptly fired James comey.
This week, the Republicans laid out their case for why Mueller must go. Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert said: “We’ve got to clean this town up, and it will start with the resignation of Mr. Mueller and a proper investigation of all of this underlying case involving Comey, Lynch, the Clintons, and Russia.”
Florida Congressman Rep. said: “We are at risk of a coup d’etat in this country if we allow an unaccountable person, with no oversight, to undermine the duly-elected President of the United States.”
Trump and his lawyers argue that the investigation should remain narrowly focused on Russian election meddling. The president warned last month that looking into his financials would amount to crossing a red line.
Trump’s attorney Jay Sekulow, warns that any expansion of the investigation would be met with resistance. In his own words:
“The mandate says it’s to investigate allegations regarding the Russian government’s effort to interfere with the 2016 election, and also if there was any coordination and links between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of the president.”
Rod Rosenstein’s letter appointing Mueller as special counsel stated that the investigation would encompass Russian election interference and any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.
